It's common knowledge that Hulk Hogan,Macho Man Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, and The Ultimate Warrior were the most influential wrestling characters of the 80's.
In the early 90's the two most influential characters has to be HBK and The Undertaker while the late 90's were heavily influenced by not only Undertaker and HBK but Triple H, Kane, Edge, Christian, Mankind, The Rock, and Stone Cold.
At the turn of the millennium several influential superstars jumped the ship on WCW and hopped on over to the WWF, Superstars like Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and Y2J. Other notable superstars are Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle.
As of current day wrestling....well I don't believe there is anyone influential enough to get recognition.
So given the information above.... My top five picks have to be the ones who put the asses in the seats more than anyone else, the ones who brought the most attention to the WWE and helped it to move forward.
1.Hulk Hogan 2.Macho Man 3.Stone Cold Steve Austin 4.The Rock 5.The Undertaker
